The Baltimore City Science Olympiad is an extracurricular science program for Baltimore City’s elementary, middle, and high school students.
Students hone their skills across many scientific disciplines while gaining valuable team-building experience under the mentorship of teacher-coaches, Baltimore area college students, and experts from the area’s scientific community.
Teams practice in their chosen events throughout the school year in preparation for the Baltimore City Regional tournament, held in the spring, and hosted by Morgan State University. Winning teams from the regional tournament will go on to compete at the Maryland Science Olympiad state tournament at Johns Hopkins University, and, if successful there, could go on to compete in the National Science Olympiad.
The Baltimore City Science Olympiad is a division of the Maryland Science Olympiad, a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, and shares that organization’s goals and objectives. One of the chief goals of the Science Olympiad program is ensuring all students have an equal opportunity to high quality science and technology education regardless of their ethnicity, household income, or geographic location.
The Baltimore City Science Olympiad’s vision is to be a fundamental part of the ongoing, systemic, positive change taking place in Baltimore. Specifically, our mission is to play a key role in assisting Baltimore City Public Schools in that organization’s effort to make Baltimore a destination of choice for families with children by providing the youth of Baltimore with a world class education.
In order to meet these objectives we will do the following:
Use science education as a vehicle to create lasting bonds between Baltimore’s colleges and universities, area science professionals, Baltimore for-profit businesses, Baltimore City public school teachers, and our public school students.
Provide an educational outlet for the creativity and competitive energy of our city’s public school students, and an opportunity for our public school teachers to set a new standard for excellence in leadership.
Foster an appreciation of the sciences among Baltimore’s youth and citizenry in general.
Forward the belief that sustainable, scientific solutions generated from within Baltimore, can be applied to solve the real-world challenges faced by our city.
Generate an excitement among city students that will propel them to seek further education, and will leave them with a lasting desire to learn.
