The Maryland Science Olympiad is mentioned in the April issue of PRISM in an article entitled, What’s Keeping Them After School? To read the article click on the cover photo..
Prism is the flagship publication of the American Society for Engineering Education, a nonprofit association of more than 12,000 engineering faculty members, U.S. colleges of engineering and engineering technology, corporations, and other organizations dedicated to promoting excellence in engineering and engineering technology education.
Science Olympiad is teaming up with FOX Broadcasting to raise awareness about STEM education by promoting the science behind the popular science-fiction-fantasy show "Fringe" via a public service and promotional campaign featuring free downloadable Lesson Plans. These plans will blend essential elements of current "Fringe" episodes with relevant Science Olympiad Division C event content (Forensics, Cell Bio, Chem Lab, Disease Detectives) and will be posted on the "Fringe", Science Olympiad and FOX affiliate web sites. FOX will nationally promote this program and Science Olympiad with on-air mentions and spots, a public relations campaign, web visibility, and support from television markets across the US. Additionally, at the 2010 National Tournament, FOX will present the 2 Gold Medal winners of the Division C event Forensics with $1,000 scholarships each, and may provide promo items for the 120 teams in attendance.

The show "Fringe" is produced by J.J. Abrams, the mind behind the ABC shows "Lost" and “Alias” and the recent blockbuster movie "Star Trek." He and his team at Bad Robot Productions are committed to using the partnership between FOX and Science Olympiad as a platform to interest students and teachers in the science used on the show as subject matter, as well as the incredible amount of science used in the entertainment industry every day.

At the 2009 Science Olympiad National Tournament in Augusta, GA, the local FOX Affiliate streamed live all the ceremonies and some of the competition, and the team at FOX Broadcasting took note. Over the past few months, we worked to create the system of Lesson Plans as a great way to tie Science Olympiad events in with the fascinating and varying content of the show. We are using Science Olympiad National Event Supervisors to write the Lesson Plans that will be posted each week.
The show is geared toward audiences over the age of 14, so we are linking to high school science and standards only.
The Maryland Science Olympiad store is now open. MSO T-Shirts and Caps can be pre-ordered for $12.00. The cost will be $15.00 if purchased at the Tournament. All proceeds will benefit the Maryland Science Olympiad.
Pre-ordered products will be available for pick up at the State Tournament.
There will be limited quanities of T-Shirts and Caps available for purchase at the Tournament.
Jun Huang, our MSO Physical Science Lab
Event Supervisor, has created a web site to help coaches and students better prepare for Physical Science Lab (Division B) and Physics Lab (Division C).
The site will keep you updated on what is going on for these events. Huang will also try to provide you with resources and study tools that he finds useful.

The snow on December 5th didn’t put a damper on our enthusiasm at the MSO Coaches Clinic. As the huge, wet flakes fell outside, MSO coaches and volunteer scientists and engineers met to discuss this season’s competitive events. Despite the weather, the attendance rate was 90 percent and a positive experience was achieved by all. Smiles were all around and comments like, “I was overwhelmed when I first saw all the different competitive events, but after today’s training I feel so much better.”
For those who were unable to attend the Coaches Clinic, please email your questions to me as they occur. If I can’t answer your question, we will connect you to a MSO scientist or engineer happy to work with you (and perhaps your team!)
A big, hearty THANK YOU to the coaches and students who attended the Coaches Clinic, including the presenters who made the training possible:
Coach Jason Johnson, Team Strategy
Coach Melissa Hartley, Examples of Previous Exams
John Appling, Randy Kleinert, and other members of the Baltimore Area Soaring Society,
Northrop Grumman Wright Stuff Workshop (with free kits!!!)
Joseph Paquette, Bechtel, Elevated Bridge Presentation
Ryan Michela, White House Communications Office, Mission Possible and Junkyard Challenge Presentations
Jun Huang, JHU Biomedical Engineering Department, Physics Lab and Physical Science Lab
Matt and Morgan Trexler and Ian Wing, JHU Applied Physic Laboratory, Egg-O-Naut Presentation
David Graham, US Army Signal Brigade, Fort Detrick, Battery Buggy Workshop
Shannon Colton, University of Milwaukee, and Krishnan Allampallam, QIAGEN,
Protein Modeling Workshop (Shannon flew in JUST for our clinic!!!)
The passion of these volunteers for their fields of science continues to amaze me. I believe passion is contagious, and all these volunteers certainly passed along both knowledge and passion in their workshops. THANK YOU and WELL DONE!
